Tucked away on the left as you walk towards Qingdao’s red tornado is BARA. The new French-owned bakery, which takes its name from the Breton word for ‘bread’, houses a delightfully clean, warm and homely interior, but what’s important here is the quality of the food. Co-owner David lamented that though there are croissants in Qingdao, they just ‘did not taste the same’ as they do in France: their bakery thus aims to bring real European baking to Qingdao’s shores. The richest dairy ingredients are flown in from Brittany, allowing BARA’s owners to provide ‘real French pastry, and real French bread.’ A hand-crafted selection of perfectly golden croissants, pain-au-chocolats (amongst other pastries), quiches, breads and many different kinds of cakes line their shelves. And to the joy of those who like their coffee early, BARA bucks the trend of Qingdao’s 10am coffee shops, opening it’s doors at 7:30am; it even offers an amazing value breakfast coffee deal of a pastry and coffee for 25RMB. ‘Our goal is to bring a real, original French bakery to Qingdao,’ David smiles. What a delightful addition to Qingdao’s culinary scene.
